DELIGHT IN THE LORD

by : Brother John Flores

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers (Psalms 1:1-3)

Dubai is such a fancy city. Despite of it being part of a Muslim country, foreigners and tourist flocked here to see its great structure and mega infrastructure that stood above its class from the rest of the world. Not to mention, millions of expats aspiring to work and live here because of the tax free system of the government and the quality of living that they can offer to their families.

One thing we can conclude is that, people come and desire to live in Dubai because of the delight in its promise of a better life. A lot of people living here are so much delighted in its great infrastructure, tax free salary, safety, good education of their children, cleanliness and the prestige of living in a so called, “mega city”.

As followers of Christ, undeniably – we are also enjoying the perks of living and working here. Most of us put our high hopes and delight on the things that surround us here. And if we are not careful in checking our hearts, we may fall on the trap of treasuring all these things (e.g. work, gadgets, salary, friends, etc.) more than Christ. It may easily shift our delight towards material and tangible things rather than aiming to get to know the Law or Word of the Lord.

The Psalmist makes a very sure statement in verses 1 & 2 and concludes it in verse 3 of a sure result when we delight in the Lord and in his words. We will all be blessed and we will all be like a tree, full of life that never dries.

There is more than material things; there is more than money in this great and fancy city. Real blessings do not come from what is visibly seen by our eyes, neither touch, or experience of happiness that we have from all these material sources.

A real blessing comes from delighting in God and in meditating his words. We need to devote on His word and make it our priority over and above everything. As he has promised, if our delight is centered on Him and his word, we will yield the fruits of enjoying his fellowship and presence forever. (3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water.) Jesus is the living water, therefore let us come and tap upon the source of life. Let’s all delight in Him.
